How Much Electricity Does an Induction Hob Use?
Nameplate watts are not your bill. This guide shows how to estimate kWh from wattage, hours, and duty cycle, using the kinds of loads in a Malaysian home or F&B kitchen.

The only formula you need
Electrical energy (kWh) = power (kW) × time (hours) × duty cycle. Duty cycle is the fraction of time the hob is actually drawing near its set power — pan on, setting high — not the hours the kitchen is “open.”
A 3.5 kW cooker that runs at full output for 30 minutes uses 3.5 × 0.5 = 1.75 kWh. The same cooker used for two hours of service at a 40% duty cycle uses 3.5 × 2 × 0.4 = 2.8 kWh. That is the number you multiply by your TNB rate, not the 3,500 W printed on the brochure.
Why a 3.5 kW hob does not pull 3.5 kW all service
Induction only transfers serious power when compatible cookware is on the coil and the control is asking for heat. Boil-up is high draw; simmering, holding, and the gaps between orders are much lower. Electronic protection also cuts power if the pan is removed or the unit overheats.
Domestic hobs in the 1–2 kW class spend most of a family meal well below nameplate. Commercial 3.5 kW and 5 kW tabletop cookers at a busy pass sit higher, which is why you plan a dedicated circuit even if the monthly kWh looks modest.

A six-zone range with 5 kW per zone is a 30 kW connected load. Chefs almost never run six zones at maximum together. The electrician still sizes the supply for the worst case the kitchen might actually hit. Compared with other kitchen loads
A split air-conditioner in a Malaysian kitchen often draws around 1–1.5 kW for as long as it is on. A 3.5 kW induction cooker used in bursts can add less kWh per day than that air-con, while still needing a thicker cable because the peak current is higher. Bills follow kWh; breakers follow amps.
Warmers in this range (around 230 W) are holding plates, not cookers. They sip energy. Do not size a cooker circuit from a warmer spec, and do not expect a warmer to boil water.
If you need a real number for a tender
- Read wattage and voltage from the product page and the rating plate — they can differ by model.
- Ask the chef for a honest duty cycle (quiet café vs wok line).
- For a site already operating, a clamp meter or sub-meter on that circuit beats any article’s example.
- Commercial quotes should include diversity if several hobs share a board.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 3.5 kW induction hob use 3.5 kWh every hour?
Only if it ran at full power for 60 minutes with a pan on the coil. Real cooking uses a duty cycle. Two hours at 40% of 3.5 kW is 2.8 kWh, not 7 kWh.
Will induction raise my TNB bill a lot?
A home 2 kW hob used for family meals is usually a small slice of a Malaysian domestic bill compared with air-conditioning. A commercial 10 kW fryer or 15 kW wok station is a production load and should be costed from kWh × commercial tariff, not from a home-hob article.
Is induction more efficient than gas?
